2014 Holiday Donation Appeal
Dear Friends and Family,
A great holiday season and cheer to you and your loved ones! In this season of giving, we would like to bring you up-to-date on the two large projects underway by Parents of Autistic Children of Oregon (POAC of Oregon).
The free assessment tool for children with autism is coming along slowly but surely. We have been working on this for 3 years and would like to wrap it up by finishing the tool and putting it on the website so people can download it, use it, and comment on it to make it better. In order to do this, we need a little more help. Currently we have 4400 assessment items that were created by POAC of Oregon and freelancers. We now need to combine and cull those assessment criteria down to about 500 to 1000. Your donation will help pay for this help. Although this isn’t a glamorous project, it is absolutely important that parents know where their children’s skill are currently, and what they need to teach. 300 language teaching modules await finishing touches. Eventually, these assessment items will be expanded to include how to teach the skills with video examples. Parents need help in understanding how to teach their children – even if it is to teach the child how to ask for water or ask a simple question like “where is my coat?” These children have so much potential; we just need to get the information out on how to unlock it!
The second project is an iPad math fact application (see http://poac-or.org/stories/math_fact) that was generously upgraded by Nick Piatt, a VOLUNTEER! Nick has donated over 30 hours of his time upgrading the math fact app in order to put it in the Apple App Store. So far we have field tested the application in two settings including a special education classroom at a high school. One of the participants was so excited she worked one evening until midnight getting those math facts mastered to the point of quick recall.
For 2015, we need your help to continue this work. With your donations we can:
1. FINISH the free online autism early learner assessment tools by 2015.
2. PLACE 3 iPads in classrooms for math fact continued development.
3. FINISH developing free pre-school curriculum to help students with autism learn to talk, ask question, answer question, and interact with the world around them.
With Christmas around the corner, some families are looking at alternatives to gift giving. Why not suggest giving to a nonprofit?
It's so true - No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted. Your monetary gift to POAC-OR helps empower parents and improve the lives of children with disabilities in Oregon.
